Christian Drouin is a family distillery near Pont l’Évêque who owns the largest collection of vintage Calvados in the world. This unique, award-winning and unanimously acclaimed range of vintage Calvados range back to 1930 and are highly coveted across the globe. The Drouin family has a passion for Calvados and their goal is to produce an exceptional product using traditional methods. By limiting the extraction of liquid during the pressing of the pomace they ensure only the very best juice is the base for their exceptional spirits. Maturation takes place in small second hand casks which have previously housed Port, Sherry, Banyuls or Cognac adding an extra complexity to the finished product. The 1973 release has aged solely in a collection of very old calvados casks – the colour is amber. The bouquet is lively at first, with apple blossom fragrances complemented by nuances of cider and baked and fresh apples with discreet hints of wax in the background. On the palate this is a virile spirit, marked by a pleasing acidity and a full bodied, multi-dimensional character. A robust calvados with a lively balance and exceptional length on the palate, this fine spirit would make a wonderful addition to any serious drinks collection.
