Arpepe – Rosso di Valtellina ’20 – Lombardy, Italy
100% Nebbiolo
If you think you don’t like Nebbiolo, think again. Valtellina in northern Lombardy is noticeably cooler than Piemonte in the south. The Perego family farm their vines on steep, terraced slopes that rise up to 700m above sea level. This produces a vibrant, elegant expression of Nebbiolo that is far less tannic and more approachable in its youth.
This cuvée is made from 50 year old vines planted in the lower reaches of the family’s vines at about 350-400m altitude. The grapes undergo extended but gentle maceration and the wine is aged in large, old, chestnut casks.
Tasting notes : Raspberry, rose petals, truffles, earth. Fresh and elegant with light, silky tannins. Extraordinarily complex !
Food pairing : Try with an indulgent truffle risotto or a buttery ravioli dish.
